Northern Flicker — The Woodpecker That Lives on the Ground

The Bird on the Ground

A flicker on the lawn looks at first glance like a large, brown, vaguely striped songbird. The back is a warm brown barred with black. The breast is buff or pale tan, heavily spotted with black dots — a pattern unique among common North American birds. Across the upper chest is a thick black crescent, almost like a bib. The face is gray with a brown crown. From a distance, your eye reads "big striped lawn bird," and you reach for a guide.

The Bird in Flight

The instant a flicker takes off, everything changes. A bright white rump patch flashes — visible at remarkable distances, far brighter than you expect. The underside of the wings and the underside of the tail flash brilliant yellow (in the East) or salmon red (in the West). The flight itself is unmistakable: deep, slow, rolling undulations — a few rapid wingbeats, then a glide with wings folded — that no other large woodpecker in North America matches. The yellow-shafted flicker covers most of the eastern United States, all of Canada, and Alaska. The red-shafted flicker covers most of the western United States and Mexico. It has salmon-red shafts, a brown face with a gray crown, and no red on the neck. Male vs. Female

The single reliable field mark for sex is the mustache stripe at the base of the bill. Male yellow-shafted flickers have a black mustache. Male red-shafted flickers have a red mustache. Females of both forms have no mustache at all — their face is clean from the bill back. Every other field mark is identical between the sexes. This is one of the few birds in North America where you can sex an individual at a glance from a long distance just by looking at one small face mark.

What Do Northern Flickers Eat?

Ants. More than any other bird in North America.

About half of a northern flicker's annual diet, by volume, is ants. No other bird on the continent eats them at that rate. A single flicker has been documented with over 3,000 ants in its stomach — taken from a single foraging session at one ant colony. The flicker's entire foraging anatomy is built around this one prey item.

To get at ants, flickers use a tongue that extends nearly four inches past the tip of the bill — twice as long as the bill itself. The tongue is barbed at the tip and coated with sticky saliva. The flicker probes its bill into the ground, into anthills, into the soft soil at the base of trees, then runs the tongue out through underground galleries, pulling ants out one swipe at a time. The Rolling Call

The main flicker call is a loud, rolling "wick-a-wick-a-wick-a-wick-a" repeated rapidly for several seconds at a time. The notes run together fast — usually 6 to 10 per second — and the whole call carries hundreds of yards through open habitat. In spring it is the soundtrack of every park, every woodlot edge, every rural backyard from Maine to Saskatchewan.

The "Klee-yer" Note

The second common flicker call is a single sharp note that sounds something like "klee-yer" or "kew-kew." It is louder and more piercing than the rolling call, given as an alarm or contact note. If you flush a flicker off the ground, this is the call it gives as it flies off.

Habitat & Range

Northern flickers are habitat generalists — they thrive almost anywhere with a mix of trees and open ground. Open woodlands, forest edges, parks, suburbs, river bottoms, mountain meadows, and agricultural country with scattered trees all support breeding flickers. The one thing flickers avoid is dense unbroken forest. They need open ground for foraging, and they need trees for nesting and roosting. The edge between the two is where they live.

Their breeding range covers nearly all of North America from the Arctic tree line south through Mexico, Cuba, and into Central America. In the United States, they are present year-round across the southern two-thirds of the country, with the northernmost breeding population migrating south for winter. Flickers in the boreal forest of Canada are entirely migratory; flickers in Florida and Texas may never leave their home county in a lifetime.

Nesting & Juvenile Flickers

Despite feeding on the ground, flickers nest like proper woodpeckers — in cavities excavated in dead or dying trees. Both the male and female chip out the nest hole, usually 10 to 30 feet up in a snag or dead limb. The cavity entrance is round and roughly two and a half inches across; the inside drops down 10 to 20 inches into the trunk. Flickers will reuse old cavities, and will also nest in large bird boxes and occasionally in holes in wooden buildings.

The female lays 5 to 8 white eggs, sometimes more. Both parents incubate, and the eggs hatch in about 12 days — fast for a bird this size. Chicks are blind and naked at hatching and stay in the nest for about 25 to 28 days before fledging. Once fledged, juveniles follow the parents for several weeks, learning to forage on the ground.

Juvenile northern flickers look very similar to adults, with three subtle differences: the markings are slightly duller and less crisp, the black chest crescent is often faded or partially formed, and the spots on the breast are smaller and more diffuse. Young males begin showing a developing mustache stripe within a few weeks of fledging. By their first full molt in late summer or early autumn, juveniles are nearly indistinguishable from adults.

Migration & Seasonal Movement

The northern flicker is one of the few migratory woodpeckers in North America. Most woodpecker species are year-round residents wherever they live, but flickers move with the seasons in much of their range — a behavior that comes directly from their ant-heavy diet. When the ground freezes, the ants disappear, and the flicker has to go somewhere they are still active.

Flickers breeding in Alaska, Canada, and the northern tier of states are fully migratory, moving south to spend winter in the southern United States and Mexico. Flickers in the central United States move shorter distances or stay put. Flickers in the South are year-round residents. The northern flicker is not endangered — it remains one of the most widespread birds in North America — but populations have declined significantly over the past half century. The North American Breeding Bird Survey has tracked a roughly 1.5% annual decline in flicker numbers since 1966, which compounds to a 50% population reduction over the past several decades. That puts the flicker on multiple conservation watchlists despite its overall abundance.

The reasons for the decline are not fully understood. Loss of dead trees in managed landscapes reduces nesting opportunities. Competition with European starlings, which aggressively take over woodpecker cavities, is a documented factor. Pesticide use targeting lawn insects reduces the ant populations flickers depend on. The general suburbanization of habitat — too much pavement, not enough open ground with native vegetation — limits foraging area. None of these is a single catastrophic threat. Together, they are pushing a once-superabundant bird gradually toward something more vulnerable.
