When Do Deer Shed Their Antlers?

The full timing by state, why bucks drop antlers every single winter, and how to find sheds on your own property.

Every year, every mature buck in North America grows a brand-new set of antlers — and every year, every one of them drops those antlers and starts over. It's one of the most spectacular biological processes in the animal kingdom, and it happens on a remarkably predictable schedule.

Most whitetail deer shed their antlers between late December and early April, with peak shedding in most states from late January through mid-March. The exact timing depends on latitude, herd health, rutting stress, and individual buck age. This guide covers everything — the timing by state, the biology behind it, and how to find sheds on your own property.

The Short Answer: When Do Deer Shed Their Antlers?

For whitetail deer across most of the United States:

  • Earliest sheds: Late December (stressed or older bucks)
  • Peak shedding: Mid-January through mid-March
  • Latest sheds: Early to mid-April (young, healthy bucks)
  • Northern states: Generally earlier (cold stress accelerates the process)
  • Southern states: Generally later (longer rut, milder winter)

A single buck will shed both antlers within 24–48 hours of each other in most cases — though occasionally you'll see a "one-sided" buck walking around for a day or two.

Why Do Deer Shed Their Antlers?

Antler shedding is driven by testosterone levels. Here's the biology, simplified:

Antlers grow during spring and summer under a coating of fuzzy skin called velvet. That growth is fueled by rising testosterone heading into fall. When the rut (breeding season) peaks in November, testosterone is at its highest. After the rut ends, testosterone crashes.

When testosterone drops low enough, specialized cells called osteoclasts start eating away at the bone at the base of the antler — right at a spot called the pedicle. Within a few weeks, the connection between antler and skull becomes so weak that the antler literally falls off the next time the buck moves, bumps a tree, or shakes his head.

This is also why stressed or older bucks shed earlier. Harsh winters, injury, or rut exhaustion all cause testosterone to crash faster, accelerating the shedding process.

Shedding timing shifts with latitude and herd conditions. Here's a general guide to peak shedding by region:

These are peak windows — individual bucks can shed earlier or later depending on age, health, and the severity of the local winter. Properties with excellent nutrition often see later sheds because healthy bucks hold antlers longer.

The Full Antler Cycle: A Year in 4 Phases

Antler shedding is just one phase of a continuous annual cycle. Understanding the whole cycle explains why shedding happens when it does.

Phase 1 · Shedding

January – April

Testosterone bottoms out. Osteoclasts dissolve bone at the pedicle. Antlers fall off within 24–48 hours of each other. Pedicle is a raw wound for a few days.

Phase 2 · New Growth

April – August

New antlers immediately begin growing under velvet — the fastest tissue growth in any mammal (up to an inch per day). High protein demand requires peak nutrition.

Phase 3 · Hardening

August – September

Antlers finish growing and calcify into solid bone. Testosterone rises. Velvet dies off. Bucks rub trees to strip it, revealing polished hardened antler beneath.

Phase 4 · The Rut

October – December

Breeding season. Antlers are used for sparring, fighting, and signaling dominance. Peak testosterone. After rut ends, hormones crash — and the cycle restarts.

How Often Do Deer Shed Their Antlers?

Once per year. Every year. Their entire adult life.

Unlike horns (which are permanent and grow continuously on animals like cows, sheep, and pronghorn), antlers are a fundamentally different structure: bone that grows, hardens, is carried for a few months, and then is shed and completely regrown the following year.

A buck that lives to 10 years old will grow and shed roughly 8 complete sets of antlers in his lifetime (bucks start growing their first set as yearlings). Each successive set generally gets larger and more complex as the deer matures — until old age, when antler size begins to decline again.

Do Female Deer Have Antlers?

For virtually every species of deer in North America — no, does do not grow antlers. Whitetail, mule deer, and blacktail females are antlerless throughout their lives. Antlers are driven by testosterone, which females don't produce in significant amounts.

There are two exceptions worth knowing:

  • Caribou/reindeer are the only deer species where both males and females regularly grow antlers. Females actually keep theirs longer — through winter into spring — which helps them defend feeding craters in snow.
  • Rare hormonal anomalies occasionally produce "antlered does" — female whitetails with elevated testosterone levels that grow stunted, often velvet-covered antlers. These are documented but extremely uncommon.

What About Elk, Moose, and Reindeer?

All deer species shed and regrow antlers annually, but the timing varies significantly by species.

When Do Elk Shed Their Antlers?

Bull elk shed from mid-February through April, with peak shedding in March — roughly a month later than whitetails. Elk antlers are massive (up to 40+ pounds per pair) and take longer to grow back, so the entire cycle is stretched later.

When Do Moose Shed Their Antlers?

Bull moose drop antlers from late November through January, earlier than whitetails. Moose need the energy reserves to survive northern winters and can't afford to carry heavy antlers through January cold and deep snow.

When Do Reindeer (Caribou) Shed?

Males shed in November and December right after the rut. Females keep their antlers through the winter and shed in May or June after calving — the only deer species where females outlast males in carrying antlers.

Shed Hunting: Finding Antlers on Your Property

Looking for shed antlers — known as shed hunting or "shedding" — has become a popular winter and early-spring activity for hunters, landowners, and outdoor enthusiasts. Finding sheds tells you which bucks survived the previous season, where they spent their time, and what their antler growth looks like heading into the next year.

Where to Look for Sheds

Bucks tend to drop antlers in predictable locations. The three highest-probability zones on any property are:

  • Bedding areas — thick cover where bucks spend most winter daylight hours. Sheds often fall when deer stand up from a bed and jostle their head.
  • Feeding areas — food plots, crop fields, oak flats with acorns, browse-heavy edges.
  • Travel corridors between the two — trails, fence crossings, creek crossings, gaps in tree lines. Bucks jumping fences or ducking under branches often dislodge a loose antler.

When to Shed Hunt

Start searching in late February in the north or mid-March in the south. Walk slowly with the sun low to spot antler tines against leaf litter. Many shed hunters work properties in a grid pattern with binoculars, covering the best-probability zones first.

One rule: don't pressure deer while they're still carrying antlers. Pushing a buck out of his bedding area in January can cost you — and the property — that deer for the rest of shed season. Wait until most bucks have dropped before you walk heavily.

How to Hold Bucks Through Shed Season

Finding sheds starts with keeping bucks on your property through late winter. Most hunters focus heavily on fall food for the rut and then completely ignore their land in January and February — which is exactly when bucks are deciding where to spend the shedding window.

High-impact late-winter habitat strategies:

  • Late-season food plots — brassicas (turnips, radishes, kale), winter wheat, and standing corn or soybeans held over winter
  • Thick bedding cover near food — south-facing slopes, switchgrass, conifer thickets
  • Water access even in cold months — unfrozen springs or artificial holes
  • Low pressure — staying out of sanctuary areas completely during January–March
  • Mineral stations — legal in many states, help antler growth once sheds happen

Where Do Shed Antlers Go in the Wild?

If millions of bucks shed two antlers every year, why aren't the woods full of them? Two reasons:

1. Rodents and other animals eat them. Antlers are nearly pure calcium and phosphorus — valuable minerals for mice, voles, squirrels, porcupines, and even foxes and coyotes. A fresh shed on the forest floor often disappears within weeks as rodents gnaw it down to nothing. You can often find "chew marks" on any shed you recover, even if you get to it quickly.

2. Decomposition is faster than people think. A shed left on the ground weathers rapidly. Rain, snow, freeze-thaw cycles, and fungi break down antler in a matter of a few years. Sheds older than 2–3 years rarely survive on the ground in humid environments.
